Interviewing is an Art

 Interviewing Is an Art

In a recent article on Fox Business titled, Common Interview Mistakes Students Make , the author sites several blunders that more than just college students engage in.  Here are a few—with a few of my own to boot:

Free Career Help

I was pondering today how much some career coaching can be; not that I really want to send customers away, but when you do the research, there are places out there that charge, for one hour of coaching, upwards of $300. I read of one company that charged $1200 just for teaching interview skills; my time is valueable, as I am sure that yours is too; however, we are in a tough economy, and sometimes the individuals who need the most help, really don't have the money it costs to sharpen their resume, networking, negotiation, interviewing skills, etc.

Finding your strengths

I recently read an article in O Magazine entitled Find out what you were born to do.  While I haven't always believed in an absolute calling in one's profession, there is research that exists that people live longer, work happier, and over all experience a more satisfying life when they identify their strengths and run with them.  How does one identify his/her strengths?  Take a self quiz or go to a career center; there are many that are available.

References

References: What to consider!?!
1.  Make sure that who you have permission from the individuals that you use as references, and make sure they are willing to give you a GREAT reference (It is amazing how many people will accept the invitation to give a reference while still feeling luke warm about the individual's performance--this will come across to the person checking references).

Build Your Brand

You must begin to build your brand! You are a brand and have to keep your connections aware of your successes and position. It will make the next search that much easier to take on the next time. You won’t have to go and find the network; you can just call on the group of friends and business professionals that have helped you over your searches, and career. In my current position at a Fortune 500 company, my job was landed back when I accepted my employment at a previou

Patience

Patience in Job Search

You must exhibit great patience during the time you wait to find you if you are the candidate selected for the position. Corporate inefficiencies will almost always make the hiring process take longer than you want it to. Some companies even plan on a constant flow of their positions remaining open. It becomes a business strategy to not fill all positions. Money is saved, manager time is protected, and budgets stay in check. Just make sure that during the interview

Landing Interviews

Networking Leads to Interviews

Landing an interview is an art. For many of us we just want to get our foot in the door and get some face time with the hiring authority. We know we can sell ourselves once we get in the door but need the chance to get in the door. One of my clients went as far as traveling to a convention in the industry he was targeting. He walked booth to booth and received no response. He handed out dozens of resumes. He couldn’t get to the right person.

Networking for a Job

Networking Works

Over 80% of jobs come from a person using their own or another person’s network to assist them. Because it is easy to apply to a job on the web through Monster or Hotjobs we often will just throw our resume at postings found on the internet for hours on end. I had one client that had posted their resume to over 400 jobs on the internet and received one phone interview. She was not invited for a

Interview Preparation

PREPARE, PREPARE

Preparation for the interview is the most critical piece of the interview puzzle. The more you work on your preparedness the better your interview will go. Many of my best clients will study for up to 30 hours in preparation for a single interview. In the industry we tell our clients that it takes about 7 interviews to land one job. Those that prepare to a great extent will get 4 or 5 offers in those seven interviews. Here are several tips for preparing.
